Can you help me? I'm doing a bit of research on which dslr to buy. I've been putting this off for the longest time cuz I am scared with the amount of stuff I need to consider. I hate shopping, I can be so anal about these things and will never forgive myself should I later on realise I chose wrongly. (argh!)

ANYWAY, I've been sieving through net reviews and so on and have narrowed down my choices into two models - Canon 400d and Nikon d80. What do you think? Which one should I choose? I don't mind investing a fair amount of money into a camera so long as it has really good features and value for money.

I'm a bit more inclined to go for Nikon. But because it is very expensive for me, I am needing a little reassurance from other people that this is the right choice. I know nothing about dslrs as of now but would want to pursue this as a serious hobby.

Another option I'm considering is buying Canon - body only and investing on a wicked lens (gawd knows wot this means cuz I'm I dunno. I'm talking off my ass!)

So again, here are some questions in my head at the moment...

which one is value for money?
which one is relatively easy to use and learn?
which one is the model that I can stick with for quite a while, with features that are fairly hmmm technology-safe. Meaning, its not going to be rubbish anytime soon because of new developments.
which one is compatible with a wider and better range of lenses?

I was actually looking at both cameras and both are great values. While there was a lot to like about the Nikon, I was leaning towards the Canon (marketed in the US as the Digital Rebel XTi). In particular, I liked the anti-dust feature and it's better at handling colors, but didn't like the heft, too small for my hands. The Nikon is better engineered, has a great autofocus system, longer battery life but is pricier and the bundled software's supposed to be somewhat crippled unless you upgrade to the full version. I looked at the site that Lazlo gave too. I ended up going with a darkhorse contender, the Sony Alpha 100. :)

I am using D70s and I still think Canon 400D would be better; cheaper, lighter body, 9-points, anti dust and etc ...

But I heard ... the lenses range for Canon would be quite odd...
And... you don't need full-range of the lenses unless you're a pro...

Don't limit yourself to only these 2 brands, when I was planning to buy my 3rd PnS camera ... Initially, I narrowed to 2 brands (Nikon and Canon) and end up buying Panasonic Lumix LX1... Open up... Pentax K10D as a hint ...
My 2cent suggestions.
I am still very new with DSLR...

K10D reviews are great. If I wasn't such a cheapo and wanted to keep saving, might have looked harder at the K10D. :)

Ey Thanks Laz... that's a very good site. Yeah, since you suggested, I've been scouring London for camera shops... prolly find one this weekend. Such a great idea to get tactile experience of it... afterall, ogling and groping the goodies is my expertise. Ha ha ha.

oh yeah, thanks, wil def check it out.

Funny enuff, i started researching without a brand or model in mind, really. Somehow, the reviews kept on raving on these two... you're right, still need to compare.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It really helps to know...

Wow, didn't know you got one, Eman. that's so cool. So how are you finding the SonAlpha 100? Whenever I see reviews, its always comparing the two I already mentioned plus this Sony one. Worth checking out.

people complain about Nikon's software and something to do with RAW... does anyone know if this will affect me much?
ecalupig wrote on Jul 20, '07
RAW is the unprocessed image file. And yeah, Nikon's software has issues but if you have Photoshop, then not really a huge issue. Actually the Sony's okay. But I still keep reading reviews of other cameras too up to now, can't help second guessing myself. Hehe.

Update for this thread: I finally did it. I think I have teared out half my hair just thinking about this. Still waiting for it to come by the post, but I have now ordered a 40D canon, with lenses 10-22 and 17-85mm. It took me even longer to consider the lens once I decided on the camera body. I was tempted with the 17-55mm f2.8 but I thought about what I would use the cam mostly for ( need a decent walk-around lens for travelling) and I can get away with 18-85 for the meantime that I'm a newbie.

Not bad. Only 4 months after the original discussion and neither of the original choices! ;)

4 months... wow... has it been that long? i've been browsing the net and been buying many camera magazines and im now officially sick and tired of the 'research' phase. now i can't wait to get my hands on my cam. thought i might as well take the plunge and dive straigh into the deep end. bahala na... i'll learn as i go along. Going to Seville next week, I hope they deliver it before then.
